Rules of Cleaning

Go clockwise

Start at a chosen point, usually an entrance. Work your way clockwise, making every move count, not backtracking. If there’s something in the middle of the room/ disconnected, clean it first and return to the clockwise work.

Top to bottom!

Clean top to bottom, looking all the way up and all the way down when coming across a section of a wall. Also clean to the right and back to front.

If it isn’t dirty, don’t over-clean it.

If it isn’t dirty, don’t over-clean it. Don’t keep cleaning a surface after it’s already clean.

Wait to rinse

Don’t rinse or dry a surface before it’s clean. You’ll end up starting over. Learn to see through the mess and feel for spots that have dirt and grime on them still. Learn the material you’re cleaning and you’ll be able to feel while cleaning if it is clean or not.

Use a better tool

If what you’re doing isn’t working, switch to a heavier duty cleaner or tool.

Examples:

To get dried tomato sauce off of a counter, grab your scraper rather than using a cloth.

if a shower glass’ water spots aren’t coming off with glass cleaner, use barkeeper’s on the white cloth.

If a kitchen sink has grime that won’t come off with a cloth, use barkeepers too.

Return your tools

Put your tools in the same place in your apron. Don’t put your sprayer on a counter, or your cloth on the tub. You’ll end up leaving it there and wasting time going back to get it.

Time track!

Track your time per step. Steps are: bathroom 1, bathroom 2, etc., kitchen, dusting/trashes, and vacuum/mopping. You’ll see what parts are needing to be faster.

Be gentle

When picking up knickknacks, do not slide them on a surface. Gently grab from the bottom and set back down gently. Be careful when vacuuming and mopping, being sure not to bump the vacuums and mop into the walls, furniture, and decor.

Pay attention.

And everything else will fall into place.
